sudden flutter
from branch to branch
an avalanche of snow

in the bird feeder
more and more snow

letter from you
for a moment I hear
a nightingale’s warble

silence—
only the goldfinch sings
in the birdcage

diary from many years ago—
a rose in the pigeon’s beak

high noon
the cuckoo’s call fills
the empty house
