into a knot

saltwater morning
alone with my thoughts
and the cry of gulls

after so many
ups and downs
we’ve come
to a complete
standstill

first light—
checking the bedside clock
with half closed eyes
I envy those who can sing
so well before breakfast

their nest
it started with
one stick

what good will it do
to watch the dim light
of your words
trying for the walls
of this widening moment?
