temple deer

walking in flip-flops
on top of the leaves
Indian summer

the distance between
a gate, or through it all
the space you learn to live through love and war
rapture
a detail often missed

after your death
the ocean comforts me
how I long
to inhale that depth of blue
the eternity of waves

I pull
colors from my mind
save them
in a quilt of memories
to keep me warm all winter

in twilight
by the beach fire
I shiver
thinking of the last time
you turned to wave goodbye
